Labradorite does come from Labrador in Canada as well as Norway, and there is actually something called labradorescence, or schiller effect, which is the result of light diffraction within the lamellar intergrowths the fine, adjacent layers divided by the cracks you can see in the image.

Such iridescent colours that nature has blended together in ways that many artists would never dare to do, yet it works so successfully.
