Ocelot Mica

This is a rare image of mica, which mankind has been using for over 40,000 years initially to make cave paintings, and has since been used by Ancient Egyptian, Greek and Aztec civilizations.

More surprisingly perhaps, you have eaten and used it, and may even have worn it as it is today used in paints and fillers, to add shimmer or ‘frost’ to food, and is widely used in cosmetics for the same reason.

In its pre-ground natural state, a single crystal (one was found in Ontario) can be 10 metres across and weigh 330 tonnes, but the fragments we use are rather smaller, and are carefully curated under microscope when their wonderful patterns and colours become visible.

Quite how this image looks so different other mica images, or why it so resembles animal fur we're sorry to tell you we don't know.

Call it a miracle if you like, but what we do know is that a different version was offered many years ago, and understandably proved popular.

Anyway, it certainly makes for a great foulard, and is stylish and uncomplicated at the same time.

As is so often the case, it needs to be seen on silk, and worn to really appreciate its excellence.
