Innes: Lake Bala & Arenig

James Dickson Innes was a Post-Impressionist artist who made his reputation painting in Collioure, the same Catalan fishing village that inspired Matisse and Charles Rennie Mackintosh among many others.

Yet Augustus John said he 'was never happier than when painting' in his beloved North Wales, and this painting brings much of the warmth and tones of the Mediterranean to the sometimes slate-like Lake Bala.

By highlighting Arenig mountain in the background he transforms the landscape into something volcanic and exotic more like Gauguin's Pacific islands than the British isles.

Whatever, it makes for a wonderfully rich and original scarf, especially when expertly printed onto top quality Chinese silk near Lake Como on the Ancient Silk Road.

That the scarf is not only a painting (rather than a 'design'), but is also by a British Impressionist, and of North Wales not somewhere rather more fashionable, will only add to the interest in it.

Frankly, it's stunning when you see the actual scarf.

The image frame is a Weston Elestial Quartz.
