In Oregon, the major source of Thunder Eggs, it is often claimed that the name comes from the native Indians' belief that they were thrown by the gods during storms - but this story was apparently invented to promote sales!
Thunder Eggs actually form in tennis-ball-sized pockets in volcanic rhyolites.
The centre is generally filled with variants of chalcedony - agate, jasper or opal - and, as here, quartz and selenite are often also present.
