Beautiful. Creative. Pleasing. Original.
Richard Weston has experimented for over 20 years now with techniques that harmonise traditional and natural 'artistry' with the surprising creations made possible by contemporary technology.
Indeed, the whole Weston brand is built around providing a unique perspective on nature through technology, and Richard, as a professor of architecture, has always been fascinated by the man-made techniques applied by artists and architects through the ages.
This is particularly evident in these strizzatte 'designs' which update a technique originated by Rennaisance painters - sqeezing (strizzatte is Italian for squeeze) a variety of paints together between sheets of very high quality glass, and seeing what results.
Rather than the random chaos and ugliness you might expect, more often than not there is created something which is beautiful, and qualifies as an artwork being beautiful, creative, pleasing, and original.
However, Richard has used a state-of-the-science digital microscope with integrated Nikon camera to take an image at incredibly high resolution of a tiny spread of paints - often less than one centimetre square, and more or less invisible to the human eye.
These strizzatte 'designs' are, therefore, very Weston, very, as they say, on brand.
