Irises is one of several paintings by Vincent van Gogh made at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence at year before his death in 1890.
The painting was influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, but it is a true original.
As his brother Theo said '(It) strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life.'
They are indeed, which explains why it is one of his most renowned works.
It's good to know that because you will undoubtedly be asked what that wonderful scarf you're wearing is, and, to be honest, it feels good to say 'Oh, this old thing. It's just one of Vincent's most famous paintings.' Or perhaps that's just us!
Despite the huge amount of research, rights negotiations, image testing on silk, and the licensing fees paid for some of the images the price is the same as for other scarves, and at a very significant discount.
The image has been made available by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
