Iron meteorites are thought to originate in asteroids that date back to the formation of the Solar System, but are most often found today in Namibia.
Their characteristic crystal structure, composed of a mixture of iron and nickel, can only form under conditions of extremely slow cooling: 1-100deg.C per one million years!
The Widmanstäten pattern that pervades this image has been revealed by acid etching the surface of a cut section.
