Rock Roses
This 'blossoming' rhodochrosite is found uniquely in an old Inca silver mine in Catamarca, Argentina. We cut cross-sections across the 5cm sample to reveal these highly attractive concentric bands of light and dark rose colored layers.
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral carried by low-temperature water, and deposited in rock veins to produce formations that resemble flowers - 'mineral blossoms'. |
