In ideal conditions, quartz forms the perfectly clear six-sided prisms we can see here. The inclusions of other minerals created the leaf-like forms in this image float in an otherwise crystal clear quartz tip. Quartz is the most abundant material in the earth's continental crust, and is commonly found in veins in rocks formed by hot water, and in the coarse-grained igneous rock pegmatite. |
