Californian Poppies
This is known as 'poppy jasper', and comes from the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains in California.
Jasper is an opaque, colourful form of chalcedony that forms by deposition from low-temperature, silica-rich waters percolating through cracks and fissures in other rocks.
The 'flowers' of poppy jasper are sections through spherical orbs whose formation is still not fully understood. They may feature concentric bands of yellow and orange, as well as the vivid red seen here. |
